Play Your Position –
Embracing Your Role in God’s Plan

Baseball is a team sport. No matter how talented the shortstop is, he can’t pitch, catch, and cover the outfield all at once. Every player has a position. Each one matters. And when each man owns his role and executes it with discipline and purpose, the team thrives.

Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 12 that the Body of Christ is no different. We are many parts, but one body. God didn’t design us to all be the same. Not every believer is meant to be the pastor, the worship leader, the outspoken evangelist. Some are called to lead. Others are called to serve quietly behind the scenes. Some teach. Others encourage. Some are wired for administration. Others are gifted in mercy. Different positions. One team. One mission.

There’s a problem when a person refuses to play their position—when someone wants the spotlight, or thinks their role isn’t important enough, or tries to be something God didn’t make them to be. That’s like a first baseman trying to throw 95 MPH heaters. It’s not his job. It’s not his design. And it weakens the team.

God didn’t make a mistake when He wired you the way He did. He gave you a position to play. It might not always be glamorous, but it’s necessary. And when we each embrace our role with humility and grit, the whole Body functions as God intended.

Don’t envy another man’s position. Don’t try to copy someone else’s gifts. Don’t sit on the bench out of fear. Ask the Lord, “What position have You placed me in?” Then get in the game and play it with everything you’ve got.

Let’s Pray

Father,

Thank You for making me uniquely and intentionally. Forgive me for the times I’ve doubted my role, compared myself to others, or tried to step into a position You never called me to. Help me to see the value in the role You’ve given me and to play it with boldness, faithfulness, and humility. Strengthen me to be a dependable person on Your team, working with others for Your glory. May I never seek the spotlight, but always seek to serve.

In Jesus ’name, Amen.

Live It

This week, take inventory of your God-given gifts. Are you playing your position, or trying to be something you’re not? Talk with a mentor, pastor, or friend in Christ about how you can better serve in your role. Then, take one bold step to actively embrace your position on God’s team—whether that’s leading, serving, encouraging, or equipping others.

Own your role. Play your position. The team is counting on you.
