Last Pitch Mentality:

Baseball is a game of quick decisions.

The pitcher delivers.
The batter swings.
The umpire makes the call.

Then, just like that, the pitch is over.

Maybe the pitcher left the ball over the middle of the plate.
Maybe the batter chased a pitch in the dirt.
Maybe the umpire called a strike that looked outside.
Maybe a mistake allowed the winning run to score.

Whatever happened, it cannot be changed.

The only choice is what happens next.

Great players learn that they cannot carry the last pitch into the next one. If they keep replaying the mistake, questioning the call, or thinking about what they should have done differently, they will not be ready for the pitch in front of them.

The same is true in life.

We often allow yesterday’s mistakes to steal today’s focus.

We replay the conversation.
We remember the failure.
We carry the disappointment.
We hold onto the guilt.
We wonder what would have happened if we had made a different decision.

But God has not called us to live trapped in the last pitch.

Philippians 3:13–14 says,

“…forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark…”

Paul understood that moving forward requires releasing what is behind us.

That does not mean we pretend the past never happened.

Good players learn from the last pitch. They make an adjustment. They recognize what went wrong. Then they reset and get ready again.

God wants us to do the same.

Learn from the mistake.
Receive His correction.
Accept His forgiveness.
Make the adjustment.
Then move forward.

Isaiah 43:18–19 says,

“Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing…”

God cannot do a new thing in our lives if we refuse to release the old thing.

Sometimes the last pitch was painful.

You prayed, but the answer was no.
You trusted someone, but they disappointed you.
You worked hard, but the opportunity did not come.
You gave your best, but you still fell short.

Those moments can hurt. But they do not have to define the rest of your game.

Your failure is not final.
Your disappointment is not your identity.
Your mistake is not greater than God’s grace.

The enemy wants you staring backward because he knows God is still working ahead of you.

Second Corinthians 5:17 says,

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

Because of Jesus, you do not have to remain chained to what happened before. His grace gives you another opportunity. His mercy gives you a fresh start. His strength helps you step back into the box.

A last-pitch mentality means remembering that the last pitch is over.

Whether it was your greatest success or your most painful failure, you cannot stay there.

Do not become so proud of the last home run that you stop preparing.

Do not become so ashamed of the last strikeout that you are afraid to swing again.

Reset your heart.
Refocus your mind.
Trust your training.
Keep your eyes on God.
Get ready for what comes next.

You cannot change the last pitch.

But with God’s help, you can choose how you respond to the next one.

High school pitcher resets on the mound as the catcher stands at home plate during a sunset baseball game.

Live It

Release the mistakes you keep replaying in your mind.

Ask God to show you what you need to learn from the past.

Receive His forgiveness instead of continuing to punish yourself.

Do not let yesterday’s success make you spiritually comfortable.

Focus on the opportunity God has placed in front of you today.

Remember that one bad pitch does not decide the entire game.

Let’s Pray

Lord, thank You for giving us grace when we make mistakes. Help us learn from the past without becoming trapped by it. When we are tempted to replay our failures, remind us that we are forgiven and made new through Jesus. Give us the humility to make adjustments, the courage to move forward, and the faith to trust You with what comes next. Help us release the last pitch and remain ready for every opportunity You place before us.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Blessings In Christ,

The Team at Bibles and Baseball
