Salt in the Dugout, Light in the Game
On the ball field, most players want to stand out—to make the big hit or rob that home run. In a similar way, Jesus calls His followers to stand out. He tells us to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. But what does that really mean? At first, it can sound confusing or even unrelatable. How are salt and light connected to our faith?
“You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world… Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” — Matthew 5:13–16
Salt in the Dugout
In biblical times, salt was valuable. It preserved food, added flavor, and symbolized purity. When Jesus calls us the “salt of the earth,” that identity doesn’t change just because we step onto a baseball field.
As a player, your attitude, words, and work ethic all have the power to influence the environment around you. Whether you’re starting or sitting the bench, your presence matters. Salt doesn’t shout—but it changes everything it touches.
Ask yourself:
• Are you the one who lifts up a teammate after a strikeout?
• Do you speak encouragement instead of criticism?
• Do you hustle in practice, even when no one’s watching?
Those are the moments when your salt shows.
Light in the Game
Jesus also says we’re the “light of the world.” Light reveals. It shows the way. It doesn’t hide in the shadows. On a baseball team, you’re often surrounded by all kinds of influences—some positive, some not. But your light can cut through negativity, gossip, laziness, or pride.
You don’t have to preach a sermon in the dugout. Just live like Jesus is with you on the field—because He is.
Your light shines when you:
• Own your mistakes with humility.
• Celebrate others ’success genuinely.
• Pray before a game—not for victory, but for integrity and safety.
Don’t dim your light just to fit in. Be bold. Be kind. Be real. And when someone asks, “What’s different about you?”—that’s your moment to point them to Christ.
Live It
This week, think about how you can “stand out”—not just on the field, but in your everyday life: at school, at work, at home, or with your friends.
Being salt and light means showing love, kindness, and truth in a world that often lacks all three. Whether it’s encouraging a teammate, forgiving someone who’s wronged you, or simply doing what’s right when no one’s watching—those moments shine.
Don’t blend in. Stand out for Jesus.
Let’s Pray
God, thank You for calling us to be salt and light in this world. Help us live in a way that stands out—not for our own glory, but for Yours. Give us the courage to love boldly, serve humbly, and reflect Your goodness in everything we do. Whether we’re on the field or at home, remind us that we represent You. Let our lives point others to Your light.
In Jesus ’name, Amen.
